The earliest meaning of the term, forensic, is suitable to courts or to public discussion and debate. Today, forensics, loosely refers to wet forensics like DNA analysis but derivative fields with a focus on the objective presentation of facts & analysis now exist. These include digital forensics (the art and science of obtaining data from a computing device), financial forensics (such as forensic accounting, fraud investigations, and other methods to gather, analyze, and present complex financial information in a dispute), and blockchain forensics (gathering, analyzing, and presenting complex information related to cryptocurrency in a dispute).
Financial Forensics is sometimes referred to as forensic accounting.

The Certified Practical Forensic credential illustrates that the holder has passed a rigorous exam related to forensics fields (blockchain, digital, & financial) and is well-prepared to objectively gather, analyze, and present facts and expert opinions based on those facts in a dispute. The Forensics Board Association was founded in November 2025 by professionals who saw a need for an association dedicated to supporting those in the forensics field. Forensics is the presentation of evidence to a trier of fact and requires many different skills.
